Why does the virtual interface still exist after deleting an IP address?

1.Question

When I delete a public or private IP address from my cloud server, why does the virtual interface remain and what does it mean for my network configuration?

2.Answer

In the Interspace Cloud, each public and private IP address is assigned a separate virtual interface. When a public IP is added, the system creates a virtual interface and makes it available in the operating system to route traffic to the Internet. Similarly, adding a private IP sets up a virtual interface that connects to the cloud private network.

When you delete a public or private IP address, the virtual interface remains but no longer supports network traffic. This is done intentionally to:

  • Prevent disruptions to your operating system and applications that may rely on the specific interface index.
  • Avoid issues that could arise from removing the interface while the OS and applications are running, as they may have active bindings or memory references to that interface.

Note that if a virtual interface used for Internet connections has no public IPv4 address assigned, it does not incur additional costs.
